The Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority (APSEA) is a unique interprovincial partnership among the four Atlantic provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, focused on providing specialized education services, programs, and opportunities for persons from birth to 21 years of age with low-incidence sensory impairments. This includes children and youth who are Blind, have low vision, and/or Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing, and who are residents of Atlantic Canada.

With a team of over 185 dedicated professionals, APSEA is child-focused, family-centred, research-based, collaborative, and inclusive.  At the heart of this work is a commitment to learner success.

The opportunity

APSEA is seeking its next Superintendent, a visionary and inclusive leader who will guide the organization through the next chapter in its history.

Reporting to the APSEA Board of Directors, the Superintendent will lead a geographically dispersed team and oversee the delivery of specialized programs and services across the four Atlantic provinces aimed at empowering children and youth across Atlantic Canada who are blind, have low vision and/or are Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing. This is a rare opportunity to influence the future of inclusive education at a regional level, ensuring that every learner receives the support they need to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

As the next Superintendent, you will be responsible for:

•Strategic leadership, governance, and organizational oversight
•Program development and service delivery innovation
•Financial and operational management
•Staff leadership, development, and engagement
•Government relations and interprovincial collaboration
•Advocacy for accessibility, equity, and inclusion
•Crisis management and strategic problem solving

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are a strategic and operational leader, ideally with progressive senior leadership experience in a public education setting. You bring deep knowledge of and experience in program development, strategic planning, budgeting, policy development, board governance, and team leadership. An understanding of current inclusive education practices and policies and a background in special education, inclusive education, or accessibility-focused practices would be considered strong assets.

You are politically astute, a confident communicator, and a relationship builder who thrives in complex, multi-partner environments. You understand the nuances of regional collaboration and are skilled at navigating sensitive issues with diplomacy and integrity.

You are committed to fostering a culture of equity, inclusion, and innovation. Your leadership style is visible, hands-on, and grounded in empathy. You inspire trust, empower teams, and prioritize the voices of learners and families.
