On June 30, 2025, the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists (NSCP), the organization that regulates pharmacy practice in Nova Scotia, migrated under the new Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and became the Nova Scotia Pharmacy Regulator (NSPR). Under the RHPA, the NSPR has been provided with the privilege and responsibility to recruit and appoint its inaugural Board of qualified registrants and public representatives. The goal is to ensure the Board will collectively bring unique perspectives from all backgrounds, as well as critical board governance skills, to its important leadership role.

This opportunity is for nine (9) individuals, each of whom would serve as a Board member for a three-year term, with the potential for up to two (2) consecutive terms. Of these nine members, there will be five (5) pharmacy professionals and four (4) public members. As part of this recruitment process, a Board Chair and Vice Chair will be selected, each to serve a two-year term.

Board members of the NSPR play a critical leadership role ensuring the NSPR governs the practice of pharmacy in the public interest, in alignment with the responsibilities set out in the RHPA. They are responsible for setting and upholding the organization's values, ensuring strategic alignment with public health needs and that the NSPR demonstrates exemplary public service principles. The Board will provide strategic direction and oversight, ensuring the NSPR complies with the requirements and expectations of health profession regulators set out in the RHPA and its General Regulations, as well as with other laws and statutes relevant to the NSPR's work and operations.

In fulfilling their mandate, Board members are also guided by core fiduciary responsibilities. These principles require members to make informed decisions, act in accordance with the NSPR’s mandate and legal obligations and prioritize the public interest above personal or professional gain.

This position requires individuals with strong character, strategic insight, and a commitment to equity and collaboration. Individuals who will:

•Provide strategic oversight and governance aligned with the NSPR’s mandate.
•Set, uphold, and promote the NSPR’s organizational values and public service principles.
•Ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in all Board activities.

Ideal Candidate Profile

As an ideal candidate, you embody the highest standards of character and integrity. You are open-minded, trustworthy, inclusive, respectful of confidentiality, and bring the moral courage needed to make difficult decisions in the public interest. You possess strong analytical and decision-making skills, think independently, and thrive in collaborative environments. You demonstrate self-reflection, embrace feedback, and dedicate yourself to continuous growth, development, and learning.
A good Board Chair/Vice Chair excels in facilitation and communication, creating an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and fosters open dialogue, even as they guide discussions toward strategic goals and timely decisions. They possess strong leadership, vision, and strategic thinking. A good Board Chair/Vice Chair builds trust and collaborative relationships, including fostering a strong collaborative relationship with the CEO and Registrar. Key personal attributes include integrity, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, decisiveness, humility, and a strong commitment to the NSPR's mandate.

While the RHPA ensures that the experiences and perspectives of pharmacy professionals are present on the Board, it is also critical that a broader mix of skills, knowledge and perspectives are present as they are necessary to provide effective governance, strategic direction, and oversight. This ultimately contributes to ensuring a well-informed, comprehensive board decision-making process and ensuring the NSPR meets its legislated mandate.

In addition to the experience brought by pharmacy professionals, desired professional experience includes:

•Government
•Risk management
•Legal and/or regulatory
•Accounting and/or financial
•Experience working in public service and/or with a non-profit or community-based organization
•Public relations and/or media experience

The NSPR knows that diverse experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives foster richer, more informed discussions, better reflecting the people we serve. Having a Board comprised of individuals that have a mix of personal demographics is recognized as vital for good governance, where all voices are heard, respected, and contribute to dynamic and successful decision-making. We encourage applicants from underrepresented and underserved communities including but not limited to Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous Peoples, African Nova Scotians/Indigenous Blacks, people of African descent, visible minorities, first generation Canadians, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals, and other marginalized and racialized individuals. In addition, incorporating the perspectives of individuals with diverse healthcare consumer and service experiences, encompassing those in rural, suburban, and urban communities will be important.
