Stella's Circle Announces Laura Winters as New CEO

ST. JOHN’S, NL - Stella’s Circle is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Winters as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective January 4, 2022.

Laura Winters has been working and volunteering with community organizations in her home city of St. John’s for over a decade. She is also a sociologist who researches resistance, especially in the everyday "talk back" of people who are stigmatized. Her leadership experience includes the development and coordination of outreach programs for marginalized women, high-level system planning for homelessness, and leading in a transition house environment. Most recently, Laura worked as an Executive Director with St. John’s Status of Women Council/ Women’s Centre.

“On behalf of the Board, I am very pleased to announce Laura Winters as our new CEO,” said Dr. Jasbir Gill, Chair of Stella’s Circle Board of Directors. “Her strategic mindset and passionate commitment to the organization’s mission, vision, and values make her the right leader for Stella’s Circle.”

As the CEO of Stella’s Circle, Laura will manage the operations of the organization and also serve as CEO of the Stella’s Circle Foundation. She will provide executive leadership and management of the organization’s strategic plan, administration, and programs and services, playing a vital role in assuring Stella’s Circle’s ongoing success.

“I believe the role of a leader in any organization is to elevate the voices and lived expertise of community members to inform both service delivery and social policy in this province. I am honoured for the opportunity to do that work alongside the wonderful team at Stella’s Circle.”

Laura holds a PhD in Sociology and a Diploma in University Teaching from the University of New Brunswick. She is also an alumnus of Memorial University of Newfoundland where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology and Master’s in Sociology. Laura is active in her community and is a member of various local and national committees. The fostering of partnerships and collaboration are foundational to all Laura’s work, along with deep-seated beliefs in the power of harm reduction, the pursuit of social justice, and a philosophy of the collective responsibility of social systems to uphold the human rights and dignity of all community members.
