Dr. Susan Brien names Vice President Medical, Academic and Research Affairs

(FREDERICTON) Tuesday, April 20, 2021- Horizon Health Network (Horizon) President and CEO Karen McGrath announced today, Dr. Susan Brien, MD, MEd, FRCSC, CPSQ, CPE, will become the next Vice President Medical, Academic and Research Affairs of the organization, effective August 3, 2021.

Dr. Brien currently serves as the Director, Practice and System Innovation at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and plays an integral part of the Royal College of Canada's International initiative as the Vice-President Asia Pacific. Her portfolio includes overseeing new regional, national and international projects, facilitating professional development activities including team training, simulation, performance assessment, simulation accreditation and curriculum integration.

Dr. Brien previously held leadership roles including Chief of Neurosurgery at Le Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Gatineau, where she currently practices as a neurosurgeon. She served as the inaugural Director of Operations for Quebec, Eastern Canada and Nunavut with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, where she was responsible for national patient safety education.

Dr. Brien is an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and a faculty lecturer with the Division of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University, where she also serves as the UGME Accreditation Lead for the Gatineau Campus. She is a certified physician executive and member of the American Association of Physician Leaders.

Reporting to Horizon's President and CEO, Dr. Brien will lead an interdisciplinary team focused on ethics, research, academics (medical learners) and physician recruitment and retention planning. She will foster and enable physician leadership and engagement and work with the Chief of Staff and other medical leaders.

As Vice President Medical, Academic and Research Affairs, Dr. Brien will oversee and ensure systems, policies and procedures support excellence in medical care and champion constant improvement, innovation, and research.

Born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Dr. Brien received her medical degree and completed her residency in neurosurgery through Dalhousie University. She has a Master of Education, specializing in medical education, from the University of Toronto.

Horizon would like to thank Dr. Édouard Hendriks, who has held this role for the past 13 years.  Dr. Hendriks has been a dedicated leader and passionate advocate for health care in the province.
