Interim Executive Director
Single Parent’s Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL)
St. John’s, NL

Step into a role where strong leadership meets real-world impact, guiding an organization that changes lives every day.

The Company

SPANL was founded in September of 1987 by Margaret Acreman. Based on her own experience as a single parent, she recognized the gaps in available services and little awareness of the issues facing single parent families.  Today, the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL) is a dynamic, non-profit organization dedicated to empowering single parents on their journey to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Through a comprehensive range of programs and services—including counseling, education, childcare, emergency assistance, and community supports—SPANL fosters self-sufficiency and resilience in families across the province.

SPANL creates a strong sense of belonging through social initiatives, peer support, and volunteer engagement. With a mission to elevate the quality of life for single parent families while promoting sustainability, collaboration, and inclusivity, SPANL continues to play a vital and respected role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s social fabric.

The Role

This is a full-time, one-year term position offered as maternity leave coverage.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, operational management, and financial stewardship of SPANL. This includes ensuring the effective delivery of programs and services, maintaining organizational stability, and advancing strategic priorities already in place.

This role is hands-on and highly operational. Leading a small but experienced team, the Executive Director will balance day-to-day management responsibilities with external relationship building, fundraising, and organizational oversight. As the public face of SPANL, the Executive Director will foster trust among partners, donors, and the broader community while ensuring the organization remains positioned for continued success.

Key Areas of Leadership and Oversight
  • Strategic Leadership: Provide steady, values-driven leadership aligned with SPANL’s mission, strategic priorities, and current planning processes. Support continuity rather than transformation, ensuring the organization remains focused on delivering impactful services.
  • Operational Management: Oversee all organizational operations including financial management, budgeting, fundraising, human resources, program delivery, reporting, and compliance (including CRA requirements). Ensure efficient, accountable, and ethical practices across all functions.
  • Partnerships and Development: Build and maintain collaborative relationships with government, community organizations, and private sector partners. Identify opportunities to strengthen financial sustainability through donor engagement and fundraising initiatives.
  • Communication and Organizational Representation: Act as spokesperson for SPANL, maintaining a strong and credible presence in the community. Share the organization’s impact and engage stakeholders through clear, authentic communication.
  • Board Relations and Governance Support: Work closely with the Board of Directors to support governance, provide regular reporting, and contribute to informed decision-making aligned with organizational priorities.
The Ideal Candidate

The interim leader possesses the resilience and adaptability to operate in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment. They are comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-demand environment and are motivated by making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
