Business Agent, Director’s Guild of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador

The Directors Guild of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Council (NLDGC) is seeking a new Business Agent to support our members working in dynamic production environments. This is a unique opportunity to play a central role in strengthening and advancing the film and television industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

The Organization 

The Director’s Guild of Canada represents creative and logistical professionals working in the film, television, and digital media industries across the country. The NLDGC advocates for its members by negotiating and administering collective agreements, supporting safe and fair working conditions, and promoting a strong, competitive production environment within the province. 

The Role 

The NLDGC is seeking a capable and collaborative Business Agent to join our provincial office. Collaborating with national DGC staff, the Business Agent is responsible for managing collective agreements, representing members, and supporting labour relations activities within the jurisdiction of the NLDGC. This role is central to ensuring member services are delivered effectively while supporting the continued growth and reputation of Newfoundland and Labrador as a viable production destination. 

Key Areas of Leadership and Oversight 

  • Member Representation: Provide verbal and written guidance to members regarding contract interpretation, employment standards, and occupational health and safety. Respond to member inquiries, support issue resolution through established processes, issue work permit applications in accordance with collective agreements and Guild policy and represent the Guild and/or members at proceedings as required.  

  • Managing Collective Agreements: Advise the NLDGC Executive on labour relations matters; prepare briefs, reports, and related documentation; and support collective bargaining preparations to balance member interests while maintaining provincial competitiveness. Collaborate with national staff and business agents and participate in industry meetings, conferences, and negotiations, including the facilitation of contract variances and approvals. 

  • Partnerships and Industry Engagement: Establish and maintain collegial, professional relationships with producers and employers. Support effective problem-solving and contribute to productive labour-management relationships across productions operating within the province. Takes a cooperative approach to working with government and partners including PictureNL (Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation), the Paul L. Pope Centre for TV and Film, and other film associations, unions and guilds. 

 

  • Legislative Monitoring and Strategic Support: Monitor legislative and policy developments impacting the screen-based industries and communicate potential impacts to the Executive and membership. Ensure significant issues affecting the Guild’s mandate, reputation, or operations are escalated appropriately to the National Executive Director. 

  • Administrative and Operational Oversight: Assist with office management, supervision, and other duties as required, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the NLDGC office.

The ideal candidate is an adaptable, detail-oriented labour relations professional who thrives in an environment driven by changing production schedules and competing priorities. They are a trusted advisor, confident negotiator, and strong advocate for members, capable of balancing sound judgment with practical problem-solving. The successful candidate values collaboration and brings a service-oriented mindset to all aspects of their work. 

Qualifications and Experience: While the Search Committee recognizes that no one candidate is likely to meet all qualifications in equal measure, those listed below are desirable and will be used to compare candidates. 

  • Familiarity with the Canadian film, television, and streaming industries  

  • Experience working within unionized, project-based, or production-driven environments 

  • Demonstrated experience in collective agreement administration and negotiation  

  • Strong knowledge of labour and employment law, employment standards, and dispute resolution processes 

  • Related post-secondary education or certification in labour relations, industrial relations, or a related field would be considered an asset 

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a labour relations or union environment considered an asset  

  • Experience providing member representation, including preparation for hearings or adjudication processes considered an asset 

  • Valid driver’s licence with availability to work varied locations and schedules 

  • Proficiency in English is required and the ability to communicate in both official languages is considered an asset
