Nova Scotia is on the cusp of a once-in-a-generation energy transformation. As the province works toward eliminating coal by 2030 and integrating more renewable energy than ever before, a new organization, the Nova Scotia Independent Energy System Operator (NSIESO), has been created to lead this ambitious shift. Positioned at the heart of the transformation, the NSIESO will be responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing the province’s electricity system, operating with transparency, independence, and a steadfast commitment to the long-term public interest.

The NSIESO is seeking the organization’s first President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a bold and visionary leader who will build upon the current foundational work of the inaugural Board of Directors of the NSIESO to fully operationalize the organization.

The Opportunity

As President and CEO of the NSIESO and reporting to its Board of Directors, you will guide the organization through its formation and lead it into the future. You will be responsible for defining and executing its founding vision and strategic direction while building the internal capabilities needed to operate a reliable, secure, and sustainable electricity system.

You will oversee the development of a transparent, open electricity market that supports innovation and competition, and ensure real-time operational excellence while planning for long-term resource adequacy. From establishing governance and internal systems to recruiting a high-performing leadership team, you will be the architect of the NSIESO’s culture, one grounded in inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and accountability.

Building strong and trusted relationships with government, the regulator, independent power producers, Nova Scotia Power, Indigenous communities, the public and other key partners will be central to your role. You will represent the NSIESO in critical policy and regulatory conversations at the provincial, national, and international levels, helping shape Nova Scotia’s place in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to lead a purpose-driven organization through a transformational time, delivering long-term energy security, affordability, and climate leadership for Nova Scotians.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Organizational establishment and transformation
  • Operational oversight
  • Strategic leadership
  • Partner engagement and advocacy
  • Governance
  • Public accountability and transparency
  • Electricity market operation and development
  • Regulatory and policy alignment
Ideal Candidate Profile

You are a senior executive with a strong track record in complex, multi-partner, and policy-driven environments, ideally within a regulated utility or the broader energy sector. You understand system operations, utility governance, and regulatory frameworks, and have led transformation while maintaining strong culture, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

Strategic and hands-on, you’ve built high-performing teams and implemented the systems, policies, and structures to support growth. You’re financially and operationally disciplined, with experience navigating governance, workforce transitions, and organizational evolution.

You bring a deep commitment to transparency, fairness, and public trust. Politically astute and technically informed, you build credibility across key partner groups including government, regulators, Indigenous communities, and industry partners.

Calm, inclusive, and resilient, you lead with clarity, courage, and a long-term vision. You are driven by the opportunity to lead an organization that will create a lasting, meaningful impact, stewarding a generational shift in Nova Scotia’s energy future.
