Health PEI is the province’s integrated health authority, responsible for delivering safe, high‑quality care to Islanders. Guided by a commitment to transparency, collaboration, and innovation, Health PEI works closely with government, community partners, and healthcare professionals to strengthen the system and improve outcomes for all residents. We operate 7 acute care hospitals, 9 long-term care facilities, and 17 patient medical homes, supported by a team of over 7,000 professionals across more than 400 roles.
The Role
As Executive Director of Communication, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Health PEI’s brand and reputation, managing sensitive health messaging, and driving communications initiatives that promote trust with partners and the public. You will foster a collaborative and innovative environment, champion best practices, and ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of services. This role sits at the heart of a unified “One Island Health System,” where success is interdependent. Executive Directors work beyond traditional boundaries, lead cross‑functional teams, and operationalize organization‑wide priorities that improve health outcomes, service quality, and system sustainability. The Executive Director is accountable for the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services aligned to Health PEI’s mission and strategic goals. You will bring stability and clarity, bridging traditional communications with marketing‑driven storytelling, aligning messaging with government priorities, and strengthening internal processes. You thrive in fast‑moving environments, think on your feet, and deliver clear strategy even in the midst of a crisis.

The ideal candidate
You are a visionary communicator and seasoned operator who excels in complex, multi‑site environments. You combine strategic insight with hands‑on leadership and have a deep understanding of the sensitivities, complexities, and risks of health communication, ideally gained in healthcare or the public sector. You build trust, navigate ambiguity, resolve conflict, and consistently deliver results in high‑stakes contexts.
Qualifications and Experience:

Salary Range: $70.03 – $86.72 per hour (Level 29)
Hours: 75 hours bi-weekly (Monday–Friday)

- Strategic Communication: Develop and execute multi‑channel strategies aligned with Health PEI’s vision, priorities, and accountability frameworks.
- Public Relations & Issues Management: Lead media relations, proactive reputation management, and crisis communications with transparency and speed.
- Government & Stakeholder Liaison: Maintain trusted partnerships including with Government partners like the Department of Health and Wellness.
- Brand Management: Build and unify a one‑health‑authority brand.
- Policy, Standards & Governance: Oversee communication policies, guidelines, and ethical standards; ensure compliance and alignment with system‑wide governance.
- Operational Excellence: Strengthen onboarding, workflows, and tools to improve division performance and responsiveness.
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a growing team by setting clear roles, fostering collaboration, and building a culture of excellence.

Qualifications and Experience:

- Bachelor's degree in communication, healthcare administration, business, or related field (master's preferred).
- Extensive senior leadership experience in public or healthcare systems.
- Proven ability to manage multi-million-dollar budgets and large teams.
- Strong understanding of healthcare regulations and best practices.
- Experience representing organizations in media and legislative settings.
- Strategic systems thinker with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proactive communications leader with strong decision‑making, stakeholder engagement, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Skilled in media relations, issues/crisis management, and government liaising.
- Adept at leading cross‑functional teams and advancing organization‑wide initiatives.
