Forest Protection Limited is a private company owned by a group of New Brunswick forest stakeholders including the Province of New Brunswick, J.D. Irving Limited, Twin Rivers Paper Company Inc, Acadian Timber, Interfor Corporation, and AV Group NB Inc. With offices located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Forest Protection Limited (FPL) has been protecting the forests that sustain New Brunswick’s ecosystems, communities, and economies since 1952. Forest Protection Limited has been a federally licensed “702” aerial work operator since 1977 and its mandate was expanded in 1992 to include a wide variety of services and activities. As a leader in their industry, FPL has a team of highly trained staff and modern aircraft and technology, including eight, 800 series Air Tractor Aircraft (the largest single-engine aircraft in production) and various support aircraft and equipment. Investing heavily in research and new technology, they continually improve their response times and service offerings to clients – primarily the Government of New Brunswick.
What Does This Role Entail?
Based in Fredericton, NB, and reporting to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director of Forest Protection Limited will be responsible for working with the Board to develop strategic plans and ultimately to lead the implementation of those plans. As Managing Director, you will provide leadership and direction for ensuring operational excellence and highly effective execution, and for developing and enhancing application technology. You will provide direction across all standing operations of the company and ensure all operations and capabilities are aligned with board-approved strategic objectives. You will ensure the organization consistently adheres to best practices and the highest standards in the areas of safety, quality, planning, and continuous improvement and make recommendations for cost optimization, and the efficient allocation of resources for research and development projects. You will manage all human resources requirements for the full-time, contract, and seasonal employees, as well as implement effective compliance programs across the company. Representing FPL’s role as a key partner in the Healthy Forest Partnership, you will work closely with government partners to champion the Early Intervention Strategy for combating spruce budworm in Atlantic Canada.
You will also have responsibility for all business planning, resource acquisition and allocation, budgeting, P & L management, and investment. You should also maintain awareness of potential new market opportunities for FPL’s services and provide them to the board for strategic direction. You will develop an in-depth understanding of FPL’s organizational assets and assess those against the operational and project needs of the organization to deliver on key priorities ahead. As the public face of the organization, you will promote FPL and its capabilities and be responsible for developing and implementing policies, procedures, processes, and controls pertaining to the operations and finances of the company and demonstrate leadership in aligning employees and processes with the core function of FPL – protecting the forests of New Brunswick. In addition to business leadership, you will bring passion, energy, and team spirit to this unique role.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is an accomplished leader and has a highly successful track record in leading a high-performance team and maintaining a close-knit, one-for-all culture. With a degree in business, forestry, engineering, or a related field, you bring highly developed business and operations acumen and experience leading asset intensive organization operations and projects. You are a self-starter who can make things happen and you have the ability to set priorities and objectives while remaining flexible and open-minded. Highly analytical, detailed and creative, you have a high capacity to learn, retain, and utilize industry-specific information, strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and you can draw upon and establish networks within New Brunswick and beyond.
You have a proven ability to assess and ensure operational effectiveness and to consistently identify opportunities for improving efficiency and service. You demonstrate a proven ability to navigate the various channels of government and objectively evaluate and assess fiscal policies which can impact upon FPL. A team player who earns the respect of your colleagues, both inside and outside of the organization, you demonstrate common sense and a practical approach to achieving objectives. You can effectively communicate a vision, management philosophy, and sound business strategy, lead efficient and effective operations (on time and within budget), and develop and implement procedures and strategic benchmarks which will help the organization make its short and long-term objectives a reality. Experience working within relevant industries and bilingualism would be assets.
