The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association is seeking a dynamic individual to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer / Executive Director.
The Organization
The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) is the voice of organized medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The NLMA is a non-profit professional organization funded primarily by its physician members to represent the political, clinical and economic interests of the province’s medical profession. NLMA membership is comprised of approximately 1,500 physicians who are required to hold NLMA membership as a condition of licensure to practice medicine in the province. Membership also includes approximately 600 voluntary members, which includes medical students, medical residents and retired physicians.
The Role
With support from an engaged Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides executive leadership and management of the Association’s strategic plan, administration, advocacy, and member services. Pairing strong leadership with visionary thinking, the CEO oversees the operations and sustainability of the NLMA. They will forge strong relationships with government, industry and regulatory partners, employees, members, and the community. The CEO manages the Association’s leadership team and is accountable for decisions regarding operational and financial management.
The CEO reports to the Board on progress and issues related to goals and objectives, policies, and budget.
The Next CEO
As the ideal CEO, you are a skilled organizational leader who is a highly strategic and effective change manager, with strong business and financial acumen. You have well-developed advocacy and policy development skills, and, throughout your career, have led system change, championed team-based cultures, and unified and engaged people at all levels of the organization. You can strategically prioritize organizational goals and provide a high-level of creative flexibility, striving to innovate and seeing possibilities where others see problems. Your authenticity, decisiveness, consultative style, wisdom, and integrity have allowed you to build meaningful partnerships and relationships. Having participated on several Boards or committees, you appreciate the value and impact that sound governance and a healthy Board/staff partnership can afford an organization. You bring exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and are comfortable managing chaos and projecting calm. You are an accomplished project manager, and you bring a sense of optimism and positivity to you work. You have an excellent sense of political landscapes and can navigate different partner contexts with ease.
Qualifications and Experience
• University degree, with a graduate degree an asset.
• 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, with experience working with engaged boards, government relations, advocacy, organizational finances, labour relations and membership engagement.
• Experience with volunteer boards and non-profit governance models is essential.
• Knowledge of the health sector landscape, particularly medical practice, within Newfoundland and Labrador is an asset.
• Demonstrated success in building consensus and maintaining positive relationships with a variety of constituents.
• Experience developing strategic partnership opportunities.
• Experience publicly representing an organization.
• Exceptional communication skills including interpersonal, public speaking, and written.
