Clinical Biochemist, Consultant
Hybrid, with a possibility of working remotely, having some on-site trips to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

Avalon Laboratories Inc. (“Avalon”) is searching for a Clinical Biochemist to serve as a consultant for its clinical biochemistry laboratory.

Avalon is a private, nationally accredited ISO:15189 laboratory that offers medical diagnostic services at the highest scientific standard. The lab delivers accurate laboratory results with rapid turnaround in clinical, public health and environmental health protection areas - meeting the needs of individuals, businesses, and government. Located in St. John’s, the company is poised for growth and is now looking to expand its scope of laboratory medical services.

The Clinical Biochemist will work as part of a laboratory team that is responsible for providing clinical diagnostic testing in our state-of-the-art laboratory using computer-aided and automated testing systems. Reporting directly to the Medical Director and CEO of the Avalon they will work closely with the Molecular Diagnostics Lab Director providing expert advice and guidance in all aspects of routine clinical biochemistry laboratory operations to facilitate the testing of patient samples and interpretation of results.

Key areas of oversight and responsibility are:
• Routine clinical biochemistry testing responsibilities such as monitoring the daily testing of blood, tissue and urine specimens.
• Using their expertise in the field of clinical biochemistry to provide analytical and technical advice to the clinical laboratory staff including:
o the determination of acceptable reference interval ranges;
o up-to-date analytical and technical advice;
o quality control assurance; and
o proficiency testing, equipment and assay validation.
• Work with the Molecular Diagnostics Lab Director to provide expert clinical guidance to the laboratory staff.
• Troubleshooting on routine clinical biochemistry issues.

Avalon Laboratories maintains an ISO 15189 Plus accreditation and this role will be expected to make valuable contributions to our Quality Management System.

What we expect:
• Ph.D. and certification in clinical biochemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry or be eligible for certification within a reasonable timeframe.
• Previous experience working as a clinical biochemist in routine clinical laboratories and demonstrated expertise in all aspects of laboratory operation.
• Experience working with multiple staff on projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining the highest standards of quality in a regulated laboratory environment.
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
