Location:
Nova Scotia

We would like to acknowledge that the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia (AHANS) office is located within the traditional territory of Mi’kma’ki, Nova Scotia in unceded ancestral Mi’kmaq Territory. It is to be acknowledged that we are all Treaty People and have a responsibility to respect this territory.
AHANS has been actively involved in building affordable housing and in upgrading, protecting, and better utilizing Nova Scotia’s housing stock since the mid 1980’s. Drawing inspiration from the city of Vienna, which has used a municipally led non-profit as an effective and innovative model for providing superior, affordable housing since 1919, AHANS aspires to be a non-profit housing developer and provider at a scale that is resilient and self-perpetuating with housing that is built to serve its purpose, while being able to meet the current and changing housing needs of local communities. AHANS has been making moves in accomplishing this goal and expanding its non-market housing portfolio, which currently includes four buildings (37 apartments), another two buildings (77 apartments) under renovation and a further three buildings (32 apartments) with construction scheduled to start in the Fall. AHANS values are cemented in the belief that decent, affordable, and sustainable housing is a basic human right and the first step toward personal, social, economic, and cultural well-being and empowerment.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads a dedicated team, oversees day-to-day operations and champions the strategic goals, vision, values and initiatives of AHANS. As Executive Director, you will act as a spokesperson for the organization and continue to develop and strengthen AHANS’ distinct voice as a provincial expert in, and provider of, affordable housing. You will identify opportunities for the development and/or acquisition of property to provide affordable housing across Nova Scotia and ensure the financial sustainability of AHANS by leveraging business and fee-for-service opportunities, diversifying funding streams, and identifying grant opportunities. As an exceptional communicator and relationship builder, you will engage all levels of government, community organizations and the private sector to further the work of AHANS and to advance the provision of appropriate, safe, and affordable housing in communities across Nova Scotia.
As the ideal candidate, you are a strategic thinker, relationship builder, and change maker and you have proven your ability to lead programs and projects in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment. You have solid knowledge of the real estate and housing sector and experience negotiating and managing multi-sectoral/multi-partner business agreements and contracts. A highly effective, authentic and compelling communicator, you are comfortable engaging and conversing with a diverse range of individuals and groups. You bring strong business and financial acumen and are highly comfortable managing the budgets, programs, and general operations of an organization. You have proven your ability to identify and secure funding opportunities through government departments and agencies, the private sector, and other partner organizations. Most importantly, you are an inclusive and community-minded leader with the passionate belief that housing is a human right, and you are excited to bring your experience and leadership to this high impact organization making a difference in the lives of Nova Scotians.
