Vice President, Operations – Eastern Zone

Nova Scotia Health is a large, complex provincial health organization with a budget of over $2 billion and with nine regional hospitals, one quaternary care centre and over 135 other service sites (e.g., community hospitals, long term care facilities, community services, support and administrative offices). It has over 23,000 employees, 2600 physicians, 5000 learners and 7000 volunteers. It is supported by over 40 healthcare foundations and 33 auxiliaries that raise funds to support facilities, healthcare innovation and services. The Eastern Zone includes Cape Breton, Guysborough and Antigonish; and includes two regional hospitals, located in Antigonish and Sydney, 11 community hospitals, and one Collaborative Emergency Centre. St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, in Antigonish, provides a wide range of health care services and Sydney’s Cape Breton Regional Hospital is the second largest acute care facility in Nova Scotia. The Eastern Zone has approximately 3650 FTEs and an operating budget of $325M.

Reporting to the President and CEO, as the Vice President, Operations – Eastern Zone, you will work closely with the Zone Medical Executive Director as part of a dyad executive leadership team in which a clinical operations and a medical leader are partnered in a shared decision-making relationship. You will have shared accountability with the Zone Medical Executive Director for providing the leadership required to advance organizational priorities, achieve goals and objectives, and conceptualize, plan and deliver high quality, accessible, sustainable and integrated / coordinated health programs in the zone.

You will, jointly with the Zone Medical Executive Director, ensure the effective, integrated, coordinated and seamless delivery of ambulatory/community, acute, public health, primary health care, mental health and addictions and continuing care within the zone, and within the provincial health system. You will ensure the management of financial, human, and capital resources within the zone and build, nurture and facilitate the relationships necessary for working with diverse internal and external stakeholder groups. Together, you will also ensure the development and successful implementation of zone integrated health service plans that align with the mission, vision, values, goals, and overarching strategic plans of Nova Scotia Health.

As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced senior health care leader with an extensive background of people and operational leadership experience. You have led in complex, multi-site organizations that include a breadth of health care functions ranging from primary care, to mental health and addictions, to acute care, across both rural and urban settings. You can quickly understand complex systems and identify creative solutions to complex problems and have demonstrated skills related to innovation, problem-solving, and achieving results. You are an exceptional communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the proven ability to build rapport and buy-in among a wide variety of stakeholders. A big picture thinker known for ‘seeing the forest through the trees’, you bring a strategic orientation and the ability to effectively engage, inspire and empower others that supports your ability to excel in this key leadership role leading cultural and operational transformation at the zone and system level.
