NSERC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC)

The School of Information Technology at York University invites applications from outstanding early career scholars who specialize in Cybersecurity and Social Responsibility to be nominated for a NSERC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC). The successful CRC is expected to have the necessary qualifications to be appointed as a professorial tenure-track or tenured professor at the Assistant or Associate level. Note that this appointment is contingent upon a successful nomination to the Canada Research Chairs program (http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/) at the Tier 2 level. The start date for this position is January 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate has earned a PhD degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or other related field related to Cybersecurity and is an established researcher in the area of Cybersecurity as evident from their publications record with a broad understanding of the technical aspects of security and has strong awareness of the range of attacks and countermeasures known and applied in the area. Their research is future-oriented, addressing emerging technologies, including, for example, advanced cryptographic techniques, biometrics, synthetic media, machine learning and artificial intelligence, IoT, blockchain networks, and social networks.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate combines such strong technical knowledge with an interest in how these phenomena and techniques relate to social responsibility or advance the public good and affect rights and freedoms of individuals, groups and societies. In that regard, the ideal candidate demonstrates experience and/or interest in building interdisciplinary bridges with social and behavioral science departments, including political science, public policy, psychology and law, philosophy/ethics and developing multidisciplinary research collaboration structures for promotion of research in the area and community engagement. Examples for such collaboration topics include but are not limited to: government and corporate surveillance, security and privacy legislation vs. practice, security and privacy in the Internet of Things, cyberwar, online disinformation, human factors in security. The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cybersecurity and supervise graduate students in Information Technology and be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations.

The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., who, at the time of nomination, are within 10 years of attaining their highest degree, with consideration for career breaks) who have the acknowledged potential to lead their field of research. Appointment to a Tier 2 Chair is for five years, is renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support, access to infrastructure funding and other support from the program directly and from the university. Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, including maternity leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.
