WorkSafeNB is a Crown corporation committed to promoting healthy and safe workplaces for New Brunswick’s workers and employers. While the priority is preventing workplace injuries and occupational disease, WorkSafeNB provides comprehensive rehabilitation, return to work services, and fair compensation benefits when these do occur. We are expanding our legal department with a new position – a Senior Legal Counsel – as part of our strategy to continue to provide the guidance, leadership, and sound legal advice necessary to maintain WorkSafeNB’s culture of excellence and caring.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel provides a full range of legal services to WorkSafeNB. This includes advice and opinions on corporate and commercial law, health and safety law, regulatory compliance, and the assessment and mitigation of risk. This role serves as the second-in-command to the General Counsel and is responsible for key leadership functions, including the continued development of attorneys and staff within the legal, privacy, decision review office, and policy departments. The Senior Legal Counsel also provides advice, opinions and information on issues arising under the Workers’ Compensation Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission Act and undertakes a variety corporate issues as assigned by the General Counsel.

The ideal candidate will have a law degree and a membership in the Law Society of New Brunswick, a minimum of 7 years’ experience in the practice of law, and a deep and varied work background with the ability to understand highly technical, scientific, and legal issues that relate to work and work processes in New Brunswick. Leadership experience or an interest in mentoring, developing, and planning for succession within a legal department, particularly one experiencing system changes and innovation, would be a strong asset. Written and spoken competency in English is required, and bilingualism is Bilingualism (strong written and spoken English and French) is an asset as well.
