In 1979, a group of business and community leaders, along with members of Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine, came together because they believed in the power of medical research to change and save lives - they also believed the Maritime region could and should be a leader in medical research excellence: Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) was formed. Today, DMRF provides critical support to researchers at Dalhousie’s Faculties of Medicine, Health, and Dentistry by fundraising to attract the best resources available to bolster their leading-edge work. Whether it’s talent, equipment, training, or space, DMRF exists to strengthen this research to positively impact health and wellness regionally, nationally, and internationally. Collaboration is vital to their success and they nurture strong relationships with research institutions across geographic borders who share their quest for innovative outcomes. Their Board includes members from the Maritimes, with recent expansion into Ontario, and aspirations of acquiring individuals from across the country. Their members passionately care about health research and its potential to improve health outcomes of the people in the Maritimes and beyond. Forty years later, DMRF has raised tens of millions of dollars, and supported hundreds of world-class researchers by endowing projects, training leaders in health research, building partnerships, and funding new discoveries. This is changing health outcomes locally, and all over the world.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with Dalhousie University’s Vice President, Advancement, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible for the successful leadership, management, and support of health research at Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation in the Faculties of Medicine, Health and Dentistry, in accordance with the strategic direction and governance structure established by the Board of Directors, and be a sitting member of Dalhousie’s Advancement Leadership Team.

As a dynamic and a collaborative leader, you will drive innovation and success, spearhead creative fundraising strategies, and build/maintain quality relationships with various stakeholders. You will be responsible for managing all day-to-day operations, supervising staff, delegating responsibilities and tasks and for implementing strategic plans and objectives of the Foundation’s mandate to align donor interests with the innovative and trailblazing health research taking place at Dalhousie. You will identify, assess, inform, and advise the Board of Directors regarding the organization’s activities as well as all internal and external issues that affect the Foundation. You will provide oversight and direction for finance and administration activities such as the processing of donations, financial operations and granting processes for research funding to Dalhousie University's Faculties of Health, Medicine, and Dentistry, as well as activities specific to the operation of a registered charity.

As the preferred candidate, you have at least ten years of experience within a senior leadership/executive role and deep experience in relationship management and stakeholder relations, ideally within a fund development environment. You have the innate ability to work collaboratively and strategically with the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Dalhousie’s Advancement team, academics, private and public sector leaders, community leaders, and various stakeholders. With superior communication and interpersonal skills, you can engage active and prospective donors in a shared vision and generate confidence in, excitement of, and commitment to the Foundation’s mission of supporting and promoting the health research priorities of the Dalhousie Medical, Health, and Dentistry Faculties.
