Colin Guthrie is a Leadership Coach and Senior Consultant of the Leadership Solutions practice at Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette (KBRS). He has devoted his career to helping organizations build their leadership capability they need for successful strategy execution. He is an advisor to C-Suite leaders, senior executives and boards in the areas of building strong leadership capacity needed for organizational success, creating strong leadership cultures, succession, and team effectiveness.
Colin believes that there is a complementary relationship between business acumen and leadership. He understands the importance of nurturing both the development of strategic skills and that of good leadership and management skills in order for business leaders to achieve effectiveness. He helps top business leaders meet their objectives by providing tailored leadership development strategies. He believes coaching is a series of steps that include the thoughtful analysis of a clients business, a clearer logic underlying business decisions, closer attention to key dimensions of implementation and operation, and more disciplined performance management.
Colin has conducted research on the comparisons between novice and expert performers, the similarities between coaching elite athletes and senior business leaders, and the psychological make-up of professional sailors who compete in around-the-world sailing races. A leader’s performance, in business and sport, is defined by the quality of the decisions made, and also on their ability to effectively communicate with their teams.
Colin has worked with organizations in a variety of sectors — including energy and utilities, retail, professional services, technology, and financial services.
Colin earned a doctorate in Behavioural Studies/Kinesiology and a Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies from Temple University in Philadelphia.
In his spare time, Colin volunteers with disability advocacy groups and remains active in the local sailing community. He promotes sailing at the grass roots level through club programs as well as not-for-profit organizations such as the Nova Scotia Sea School.
Colin resides in the Halifax area and enjoys an active lifestyle with his wife and two young children.
